Joan Podd has been training dogs for over 10 years and is a certified AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator, STAR Puppy Evaluator, and American Temperament Test Evaluator. She has studied positive training techniques with nationally and internationally known trainers in obedience, rally and agility. She has also trained dogs in nose work, freestyle and tricks. Joan is GKC’s Director of Training and teaches the puppy Kindergarten class and assists with manners class. At her previous club in Columbia, SC she taught Puppy Kindergarten, Obedience, Agility and Rally.
The methods used in Joan’s classes focus on not only basic commands (sit, down, stay, etc.) but building a relationship with your dog, socializing and training to have a confident companion dog or a dog that can go on to compete in obedience or other dog sports.
At the present time Joan owns and trains two dogs, ZIva a 8-year-old standard poodle and Maggie Mae an 11-year-old labradoodle. Both dogs have advanced titles in rally, obedience and agility. Maggie Mae is also a TDI therapy dog and both dogs are CGC, CGCA, and ATT certified.
As a former teacher Joan loves to bring the wisdom of 38 years in a classroom into the training ring by developing a sequential program of positive training strategies, fostering relationships between owners and their dogs and setting dogs and owners up to succeed.
“It is always such a joy to see owners and their dogs succeed to become the team they were meant to be.” Joan Podd
